Guide

Can you remove pebbledash without damaging the brickwork?

Short answer: yes, in most cases. Done with the right tools and a careful eye on the substrate, pebbledash removal leaves the brick underneath intact and ready for either repointing or a fresh render coat. Done badly — or done on the wrong substrate — it can chip face brick that then needs replacing.

When brick is at risk

  • Soft Victorian or Edwardian brick. Older brick is more porous and chips more easily under aggressive chisel work.
  • Hollow-bonded pebbledash. If the dash isn't bonded properly, the chisel can lift sections that take face brick with them.
  • Inexperienced operators. Wrong chisel angle, wrong section size, no patience — that's when damage happens.

How a specialist avoids it

Reading the wall before starting. Adjusting chisel angle for the substrate hardness. Working in small panels rather than long passes. Switching to hand chisels for tight spots and corners. Knowing when to stop. There's no shortcut — it's patience plus method.

If the brick underneath turns out to need attention anyway, that's built into the quote — we don't leave you with a wall that needs more work after we've gone. See our main pebbledash removal service for the full process.
