External render removal in Swindon

Cement render that's cracked, blown or trapping damp. Stripped back safely to a sound substrate, ready for repair, re-render or external wall insulation.

External render does a job — until it doesn't. The most common problem we see in Swindon is mid-1980s sand-and-cement render applied over older brick: rigid, non-breathable, and locked tight to a substrate that wants to move. After a couple of decades of UK weather, you get cracks tracking through the render, water getting in behind, and damp showing on the inside walls.

External render removal isn't dramatic work, but it's careful work. The render has to come off cleanly, without taking the brick face with it, and the substrate behind needs proper inspection before any decision about what goes back on.

When external render needs to come off

  • Cracking. A network of cracks bigger than hairline isn't cosmetic — it's a moisture path.
  • Hollow sections. Tap the wall. If it sounds drummy, the bond is gone.
  • Blown render. Once chunks have come off, the rest is following.
  • Damp inside. Trapped moisture between render and brick will show up as patches on internal walls.
  • EWI upgrade. External wall insulation needs the existing render off first.

Method

Sheet, scaffold, mechanical removal in panels, debris bagged as we go. Same disciplined flow as our other removal work — see the pebbledash removal page for the full method walk-through. The differences with external render are usually in the substrate condition behind: rendered walls in Swindon often hide a mix of original brick, patches and mortar repairs that need sorting before any new finish goes back on.

What goes back on

Most clients re-render after external render removal — usually with silicone renderfor breathability, or monocouche for a one-coat through-colour finish. Some prefer to repair the brick and leave it exposed. We'll talk you through what makes sense for your specific wall.

Frequently asked questions

Does external render need removing if it's just cracked?+

Hairline crazing can sometimes be repaired and over-coated. But cracks that have opened up, sections that sound hollow when tapped, or visible damp behind the render generally need full removal — patching only delays the failure.

Can you remove external render before EWI is installed?+

Yes. External wall insulation (EWI) needs a sound substrate, so existing render almost always comes off first. We work with EWI installers across Swindon.

What about render on a chimney or above a bay?+

Scaffold goes up wherever it's needed. Chimneys and bay roofs are standard parts of full-elevation render removal.
